Get the GIST: A Summarizing Strategy for Any Content Area
The GIST strategy is effective for building an inclusive classroom. It allows all students to approach a complex text on equal footing because classmates help each other access difficult vocabulary and develop summarizing skills. GET THE GIST is a reading comprehension practice to help students identify and write brief main idea statements about sections of text. Students are taught to stop at predetermined points while reading and use a 3-step process to write their gist (main idea): Step 1) .

All students benefit from strategy instruction. Too many strategies taught in a short amount of time do not lead to transfer or independent performance of the strategy because students are not able to practice before applying them to content. Therefore, students should learn one or two strategies to allow for transfer. Students need to learn a reading strategy out of context of the content area in order to effectively assimilate the strategy.
